Colossus of Rhodes

The colossal statue that once stood, was of the sun god Apollo. Around 280 B.C. this great image was completed by Chares of Lindus. Today, we know now that the statue could have not straddled the harbor.

The Colossus of Rhodes stands 100 feet high and was made of brass or bronze. The remains of the colossal was bought by a junk man about ten centuries ago to be used as war implements. Today, not one peice remains of the colossal, but from ancient writings we can get an idea of how great the size and appearence of the Colossus of Rhodes once was.
