Lighthouse of Alexandria

Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, least is known about the Lighthouse of Alexandria, today. From 265 and 247 B.C. is when King Ptoltemy Philadelphus built the lighthouse. This was a great lighthouse that was used to guide mariners to the Mediterranean. It was located on an island in the bay of Alexandria. It was built of white marble, which reached to the height of 400 feet. On the top of the lighthouse a great bonfire was kept burning at night, that was to show ancient seaman the way to, in those days, the most famous port in the world. Not a single stone of the lighthouse survives today. What had remained of it in the 13th century was destroyed by an earthquake. Since then it's remains have disappeared. The accounts left by ancient writers is our only source of knowledge regarding it.
