The tomb and monument of King Mausolus of Caria was the first and most magnificent of ancient Mausoleums. Erected at Halicarnassus, by his grieving window in 352 B.C. It become one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World because it was so beautifully designed and decorated, it was built in Greek style. The Mausoleum was built in a quarry on the slopes above the harbor. Height of the building reached 140 feet and consisted of five parts: the basement, an enclosure of columns, pyramid with steps, pedestal, and chariot group on top. Almost nothing remains of the building today after it was laid to ruins by an earthquake. Sculptures have been dug up from the site of the building and taken to the British Museum in London. |
