His Death

After J. R. R. retired, he and his wife Edith moved to Bournemouth in 1969. Edith died in 1971. She was 82 years old. Tolkien then moved back to Oxford. He received the Commander of the Brittish Empire by the Queen in 1972. Only two years after his wife's death, Tolkien himself died at the age of 81. The two are buried together in one grave in the Catholic section of Wolvercote cemetery in Oxford.
