Basketball History

The inventer of Basketball was Dr. James Naismith. In the beginning basketball was played with two peach buckets and a soccerball. The first basketball contest was believed to be played December 21, 1891. There were many changes made to 13 origanial rules throughout the years and there are still changes going on. In 1896, field goals were changed to two points and free throws changed to one. The number of subs steadily increased from two to seven. The court was soon split up into two halves and they played 15 minute halves.

The backboard was made out of glass and the 5 foul rule was developed. Coaches were allowed 3 timeouts and the ball inbounded from the baseline. The three second rule was developed to keep tall players from "camping" under the basket. The ten second rule was developed shortly after that. The rules of basketball has changed so much over the years. The one thing that has never changed is the object of the game which is:

"Put the Ball in the Basket!"
