
Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6 in the year of 1861. He was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada to John and Margaret Naismith. James had two younger siblings, Annie and Robbie. After their parents died they had to live with their maternal grandmother until 1873 when their grandmother died. They soon moved in with their uncle Peter Young. As a young boy, his friends and he made up many different games and they also began to hunt. They would hunt squirrels, partridge and snowshoe hare with bows and arrows.
James went to high school in Almonte and attended a variety of colleges. He recieved a Philosophy Degree at McGill University in Montreal in the year of 1887. At Presbyterian College also in Montreal, he recieved a Religion Degree in the year of 1890. In Springfield, MA he recieved a Physical Education Degree and the YMCA Training School. He last recieved a Medical Degree at the Gross Medical School at the University of Colorado.
After college Naismith began working at a YMCA in Springfield Mass. He was ordered by Dr. Luther Gulick, to invent a game that could be played indoor for the winter. He was told to create an indoor game that would provide a distraction for a rowdy class in 14 days. Naismith tried to bring outdoor games in only to discover them to physical to be played inside. He struggled to meet the deadline. He soon developed the 13 original rules of basketball.
