The first real American muscle car was made in 1964. It was made by Pontiac, it was called the GTO. This car had many more nicknames like the Goat, the judge, and for a while a tiger.
This car started the "Muscle Car Mania". This car made other cars have to keep up with the power and performance, and also the handling. So this created a huge market for cars specifically designed for showing and racing.
Creating the first muscle car was not easy for Pontiac (GM). John Delorean was the man behind the idea to build a machine of this caliber because they had to put a high powered engine in a mid-sized car. The goat had a 330ci engine in it and the real name was Gran Tourismo Omologato.
