Mrs. May was born in Pampa, Texas on April 3, 1936. She spent most of her younger life in the southern part of Texas, around Orange Texas. Mrs. May attended grade school at a Catholic school right across the Sabine River in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It was during the war (WW2) and the schools were crowded. Most teachers were working in the airplane factories and ship yards, building for the war. She boarded at the school during the week and came home on weekends.
Her family later moved to the Texas Panhandle, then to the Pecos, Texas area where she experienced the art of picking cotton. Although the lessons on work ethics was apprecitated. Her family then moved to Hondo, Texas, which is beautiful ranch country.
Mrs. May loves horses and was fortunate enough to live on a ranch where she got lots of practice riding horses. The family raised quarter horses and cattle. She then graduated from Hondo in 1953.
Mrs. May had many aunts and cousins who were educators so they were a big influence to her. She always wanted to be a teacher. Her uncle was the basketball and football assistant coach at West Texas A&M, so that is where she attended college. The got a teaching position at Liberal, Kansas and inched her way into the Moscow area where she got married to her late husband, Eldon May, in 1957.
